Analogous to the way that sound wave is composed to play beautiful music, light can be crafted to manipulate atoms in a particularly designed fashion. Based on cutting-edge wave-form shaping techniques in ultrafast laser optics, we demonstrate a series of unconventional atomic transitions performed by phase-coded light waveforms.
