Active Terahertz Metamaterials
We report on the terahertz (THz) switching based on the micro- and nano- sized resonators with metal-insulator phase transition of vanadium dioxide thin film. Terahertz wave transmission through subwavelength apertures is controlled by temperature and photo excitation driven refractive index change of substrate. Remarkably, the nano-patterned sample allows the extinction to fall by two orders of magnitudes with completely shutting-off the resonance characteristics. The extremely small apertures with dynamic control of dielectric film would find immediate applications in high modulation device.
